Course objectives: French 2001 is designed to help you to strengthen your linguistic skills in French. Building on what you’ve already learned, we will study several grammatical concepts with an eye toward learning more of the exceptions and on refining your understanding of the structure of French. In this course we will also build up your vocabulary, your listening skills, your speaking skills, your reading skills, and your writing skills so that you can communicate better and with more ease in French. Finally, we will also continue to broaden your understanding of French and Francophone culture through various activities, such as listening to music, poetry readings, reading literature, watching movies, and engaging in on-line activities.

Required texts:
Thompson, Chantal and Bette Hirsch Ensuite: Cours intermédiare de français. 4th Edition.
Thompson, Chantal and Bette Hirsch Ensuite: Cours intermédiare de français, 4th Edition, cahier.
Un bon dictionnaire français/anglais

Optional materials, available at the bookstore:
Morton, English Grammar for Students of French, Strongly recommended!!

Daily participation: Language learning is a skill which demands much practice. It is expected that students will come to ALL classes prepared to take advantage of every opportunity to contribute ACTIVELY in class. Attendance is a must. Regular attendance in any course is important, but for the American language student, who speaks roughly only 3-5 hours of French (versus 60-70 hours of English) a week, regular attendance becomes more essential. Serious language students seek ways to extend these precious contact hours beyond this minimum. You are allowed up to three absences TO BE USED FOR ILLNESS. If you have more than THREE ABSENCES during the term, your grade will be lowered 1/3 grade per absence past your third one.

French conversation table: Your attendance at the weekly French conversation table and at cultural events organized by Entre Nous, the UMM French Club, is very strongly encouraged. It is a great way to have some fun, improve your French and meet other French speakers at different language levels on campus! I will inform you about these events and when and where the table will be meeting this semester.

The University of Minnesota's grading policies

Examens écrits: You will have a total of 3 written exams this semester, each of which will cover one “thème,” or three chapters. In each written exam, you will be tested on your mastery of the vocabulary and the grammar that we have studied, as well as your listening comprehension and writing skills. I cannot stress strongly enough how important it is to study EVERY SINGLE DAY. Do your workbook and memorize your vocabulary and grammar as you go along. The night before the exam should be a review, solidifying what you have already memorized.

Examen oraux: You will have a total of 3 oral exams, providing you with the opportunity to show off your speaking and listening skills. For your oral exams, you will be graded on the content of the material you present, the accuracy of your grammar, the correctness of your pronunciation, the comfort level you display in French, and your ability to understand me when I speak with you. I will provide more detail about the oral exams prior to their scheduled times.

Rédactions: The word “rédaction” means a paper. You will write 3 rédactions this semester, covering the topics we will be studying. In your rédactions, I expect you to use a variety of vocabulary, accurate grammatical structures, and to provide interesting, creative content.

Cahier: You should treat your workbook as practice tests. Your workbook is your friend—it is a wonderful, analytical tool for you to assess where you have mastered the material, and where you need to spend more time studying. You should follow these steps:
1. Study the corresponding material in the textbook first. Memorize vocabulary, memorize grammatical points, etc.
2. Do the activities in the workbook that correspond to the material you just studied.
3. Check your answers against the key provided in the back of the workbook and CORRECT YOUR ANSWERS IN A DIFFERENT COLORED PEN/PENCIL. IMPORTANT: You need to leave a trace. If you got all of the answers right, be sure to leave a star, a smiley face, or some other mark indicating that you have corrected the exercise.
4. Analyze the kinds of errors you made.
5. Go back and re-study those areas where you had difficulties.
6. Bring questions to class or to my office hours if you cannot figure out how to fix your errors.

Your cahier will be graded according to the following criteria:
1. You will receive 1 point per exercise for completing it. You will receive a 0 if it is not finished.
2. You will receive 1 point per exercise for self-correcting your work IN A DIFFERENT COLORED PEN/PENCIL AND FOR LEAVING A TRACE OF THESE CORRECTIONS.
3. You will receive 5 points per open-ended exercise (those exercises that do not have answers in the back of the workbook).
4. You will receive 20 points for each writing section at the very end of the chapter.

Quizzes, misc.: Because our exams cover three chapters at a time, there will be occasional quizzes, to check on your mastery of the material. There may also be other assigned assignments from time to time.
